Why SMBs should care
AI ethics isn't just for big tech. If you use AI to screen job applications, recommend products, set prices, or make decisions that affect customers, you have ethical (and increasingly legal) obligations. The UK's AI White Paper and the EU AI Act set clear expectations for transparency and fairness in automated decision-making.
Practical ethical considerations
Bias: Language models inherit biases from their training data. If you use AI for hiring, customer scoring, or content moderation, audit the outputs for systematic bias against protected characteristics.
Transparency: Tell users when they're interacting with AI. A chatbot should identify itself as automated. AI-generated content should be disclosed where legally required or ethically expected.
Privacy: Be deliberate about what data you feed into AI systems. Customer data processed through third-party APIs may be subject to GDPR obligations. Self-hosted solutions like OpenClaw keep data local but still require proper data handling practices.
Accountability: When AI makes a mistake — and it will — who is responsible? Establish clear ownership and escalation paths. AI guardrails and human oversight are ethical requirements, not optional extras.
