Wireframe
A low-fidelity blueprint outlining page structure before visual design begins.
What wireframes establish
Wireframes define section hierarchy, content placement, and user flow without colours, images, or final copy. They answer structural questions: What goes above the fold? Which sections appear in what order? How do visitors navigate between pages?
This stripped-back format focuses attention on functionality rather than aesthetics. Is the contact form easy to find? Does the navigation make sense? Do CTAs appear at logical points? These questions matter more than colour choices at this stage.
Benefits of wireframing
Wireframes allow stakeholders to evaluate structure before committing to detailed design work. Changing wireframes takes minutes. Changing finished designs takes hours or days. Early feedback prevents expensive later revisions.
Wireframes also force content planning. What messaging goes in the hero? What proof elements support claims? What case studies appear? Answering these questions before design ensures content drives structure, not the reverse.
Fernside wireframing process
We create wireframes for every Studio Site after the discovery workshop. These low-fidelity blueprints use greyscale blocks and placeholder text to show layout without visual design.
Loom walkthroughs explain our thinking: why we've structured pages this way, what each section accomplishes, how pages connect. You review, provide feedback, and we iterate until structure aligns with goals.
From wireframes to design
Once wireframes are approved, design work begins. The visual layer adds brand colours, typography, imagery, and polish. But structure—established in wireframes—remains largely unchanged.
This sequential approach ensures alignment happens at the right time. Debate structure when structure is cheap to change. Debate visual design when structure is locked. This prevents scope creep and maintains project momentum.
Why it matters
Understanding “Wireframe” helps you speak the same language as our design and development team. If you need help applying it to your project, book a Fernside call.
