Where core Stripe takes payments, Stripe Billing manages the ongoing relationship of a subscription. It handles plans, prorations, invoices, tax where configured, and the awkward edge cases of recurring billing that are tedious to build well by hand.

For any business with subscriptions, this is a major shortcut. The hard parts of recurring revenue, retries on failed cards, plan upgrades and downgrades, dunning emails, are handled by infrastructure that is already tested at scale.

The customer side

Stripe Billing offers a hosted portal where customers update card details, switch plans, and download receipts themselves. This is often the easiest way to give clients a customer portal without building one from scratch.

Letting customers self serve here directly protects recurring revenue, since a smooth way to fix a lapsed payment prevents avoidable cancellations.

Connecting billing to the site
